The first UK/Europen Girls Skateboard film focusing on the top riders in the country and also those who’ve helped shape the scene over the years into what it is today. Special mention has to go out to Sue Hazel who very kindy let us borrow her ‘not seen before’ cine footage – to use for this film – amazing to see some of the spots back in the day.
When considering skateboarding, there have been girls and women involved since it’s advent. Until recent times, the general consensus was to dismiss a girl on a board as a novelty. The rarity of seeing a girl who could do more than ollie up a curb would result in the individual being referred to in a way that specified gender before talent.
Over the last few years many women have been changing these attitudes: through video parts, magazine coverage and competitions – in the UK, the female scene is now more pro-active and progressive than ever before.
The 19th June saw the annual Girl Skate Jam Uk kick off at Pioneer Skate Park, St. Albans. The competition now in it’s 9th year is one of the most popular on the female skateboarding calender, 2010 being no exception.- attracting a wide range of riders from all over the UK (Glasgow, Hartlepool, London, Cardiff, Birmingham) and also from across Europe (Czech, Italy, Belgium and Poland). For the first time this year there were entrants from further afield – New Zealand and Australia. One of the judges even travelled over from Japan!

Girls from Czech, Poland, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Spain and the UK traveled to the infamous Pioneer Skate park in St Albans on June 20th for the 8th annual Girl Skate Jam. More than 40 riders turned up to skate the comp. Hats have to go off to the 6 girls who came over from Spain and camped in the green next to Pioneer for two nights and nearly got abducted by a taxi driver!!

Our First Tour! Jumped into a couple of cars and trundled around the Midlands and South Wales ending up in Oxford to spread the word..and that word was skateboarding!
